HOW OFTEN SHOULD ADULTS GET THEIR EYES CHECKED?

Elderly woman getting her eyes checked

Many eye diseases have no signs or symptoms, which is why it’s so important to have your eyes checked in order to maintain good vision and healthy eyes. The timing is based on age, health and risk of developing eye problems.

If your eyes are healthy and your vision is good, the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that you have a complete eye exam by your ophthalmologist once in your 20s, twice in your 30s and at 40 which is when changes in vision and early stages of eye diseases may appear. There are some exceptions such as if you:

  • have an infection, injury or eye pain
  • notice sudden floaters and flashes or patterns of light
  • have diabetes or have a family history of eye disease, your ophthalmologist will let you know how often you need to have your eye exams
  • wear contact lenses or need to update your glasses, see your eye specialist every year.

See your ophthalmologist now if you have an eye disease or health factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure or if you have a family history of eye disease.

SENIORS
